Our
programs are designed to address the specific issues facing homeless
and at-risk children, provide the education and support they need,
and break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.
Technology
Teachers and volunteers from San Diego’s technology community
and local colleges and universities work to train students for a
future in the 21st century. Our computers and equipment are state
of the art.
Visual & Performing Arts
Art instruction has a powerful impact on our kids. Through the arts,
they learn social skills, self esteem, and have an outlet for self-expression.
Treasured partnerships with local artists, musicians and organizations
such as The San Diego Museums (including SDMA, MOPA, The Timken
Museum, MOCA), La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego Opera, Junior Theater,
and the Mainly Mozart Program make a daily difference in the lives
of our students.
The Steel Drum Band - Listen to the Band
In early 1999, Monarch staff handed Monarch students interested
in learning how to play steel drums their first instrument: A sledgehammer.
Those early recruits were required to build their own instruments!
This level of dedication to their craft has remained a tradition
of the Steel Monarchs, whose popularity, talent and penchant for
practicing have built a reputation for professionalism. The band’s
high-profile success has extended to their being hired for public
performances and special events, and has provided opportunities
for more than 30 current and former participants of the steel drum
band program. If you’d like to hire the Steel Monarchs for
your next big event, please contact Rob Tan at (619)
685-8242 ext. 225. (You’ll be glad you did!)
Mentoring & Tutoring
Mentors at Monarch have a chance to make a great difference in the life of a young person. Through a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, students at Monarch School are matched with mentors who provide at least a one year commitment. Please contact Kristin Shea for more information at kshea@monarchschools.org or (619) 685-8242 x235.
Career Development
Showing our students a different world, one of opportunity and hope,
is sometimes the greatest single gift we can give them. Monarch’s
career development program includes classes in independent living
and careers, internships, volunteer presentations by industry and
HR speakers, job fairs and work experience.
Entrepreneurial Leadership
Supported by the Junior Achievement Program, student-created “Butterfly
Enterprises” plans and develops real products for sale.
The most successful venture yet? A line of butterfly-themed jewelry,
handmade by the students. Students learn about marketing and sales,
company stock, business ethics and profit and loss projections.
In the process, they make some beautiful bracelets, necklaces and
earrings. For more information, or to place an order, go
to www.monarchshop.com.
Post-Graduation Support
Once a Monarch student has graduated, mentors and staff often continue
to work together, helping the student with the sometimes difficult
transition into adult life. Students begin planning for graduation
when they are juniors. They are connected to opportunities for college,
vocational training, military service, scholarships, grants and
financial aid.
