and the nonprofit Monarch School Project, a 501(c)(3) organization
Steel Monarchs
Established in 1999, the Steel Monarchs steel drum band provides a creative outlet for students at Monarch School. Playing in the band allows our students to express their creativity and also a fun way to learn the discipline of working as part of a group. Band members make a significant commitment of their free time to the band, practicing four days a week and performing at 5-7 gigs per month. In addition, band members have the opportunity to act as goodwill ambassadors for the school at fundraisers and social events throughout the community.
Noted local steel-band musician Robbie Hutchinson serves as band leader, instructor, and chaperone on gigs. Any Monarch student who wishes to learn the steel drums and play in the band is welcome to try out.
Funding for the steel band provides uniforms, drycleaning between performances, food for band members during peformance outings, instruments and cases, and chaperone costs. There is not a set fee for the performance, however there is a suggested donation of $250-$500.
The Steel Monarchs have performed at a variety of events including:
- Point Loma Summer Concert Series
