The Partnership

Monarch School is a unique public-private partnership between the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) and the nonprofit Monarch School Project, a 501(c)(3) organization.

SDCOE provides approximately 45% of Monarch’s funding by covering the basic education elements of the school—teachers, aides, instructional materials, and an accredited education. The Project provides healthcare, clothes and food along with enrichment and support programs including an after school program, counseling, expressive arts therapy and family assistance.

The Monarch School Project provides vital community support for the school, without which student success would be virtually impossible—students cannot learn to read and write if they are hungry, dirty and ashamed of their worn clothes.

Monarch School is the largest and most comprehensive program of its kind for homeless kids in the U.S., and is a model for how a community can successfully educate homeless children to become productive citizens.
