Susan Armenta
Susan Armenta is the Executive Director and Head Teacher of San Diego’s Monarch School. One of the leading schools of its kind in the United States, Monarch is dedicated to providing an education and basic services to homeless and at-risk kids.

Susan began at Monarch in 1996. A passionate teacher and inspirational leader, she is especially proud of her students’ success. Much of the credit, she says, goes to her staff.

“The Monarch Team gives more than 200 percent,” says Susan. “They provide San Diego’s homeless children with stability and a top-notch education.”

Susan’s passion for her work has earned her nationwide recognition. In 2000, Susan was featured in the PBS national program No Greater Calling, as one of six exemplary teachers in the United States. In 1999, she won the Downtown San Diego Partnership Frank Curran Humanitarian of the Year award. She was an honoree for 2001’s Civic Excellence award for reinforcing K-12 education reform by the San Diego Dialogue/UCSD Extensions. In 2002, Susan was selected by San Diego Magazine as one of the “Top 50 to Watch.”

Prior to the Monarch School, Susan was building foundational experience at Juvenile Hall by helping educate at-risk students.

Susan initiated study for a Bachelor of Arts in Business from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She completed the degree at National University in California, and holds single-subject teaching credentials in Math, Business and CLAD. She is also a member of the Bishop’s School Ambassador’s Council.
